Roof Shingle Calculator by Square Feet

If you already know your roof area in square feet — whether from blueprints, a previous inspection report, or satellite measurements — you can skip the measurement step and jump straight to calculating bundles. Our roof shingle calculator by square feet converts any sq ft value to bundles, squares, and cost.

Quick Formula

Bundles = (Sq Ft ÷ 100) × 3 × Waste Factor. For 1,500 sq ft with 10% waste: (1,500 ÷ 100) × 3 × 1.10 = 50 bundles.

Important: The sq ft value must be the actual sloped roof area (after pitch multiplier), not the flat building footprint. If you only have the footprint, learn how to apply the pitch multiplier first.

Sloped Area vs. Flat Footprint — Why It Matters

A common mistake is using the building's flat footprint area directly. The actual roof area is always larger due to slope:

  • A 4/12 pitch adds 5.4% more area
  • A 6/12 pitch adds 11.8% more area
  • An 8/12 pitch adds 20.2% more area
  • A 12/12 pitch adds 41.4% more area

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bundles of shingles per 100 square feet?

3 bundles per 100 sq ft (1 roofing square) before waste. With 10% waste, budget 3.3 bundles per 100 sq ft.

Where can I find my roof's square footage?

Check your home's property records, building blueprints, or a previous home inspection report. You can also measure from satellite imagery using Google Earth, or measure from the ground and apply the pitch multiplier. See our guide on how to measure a roof for shingles.
