How Gambrel Roof Shingle Calculation Works

A gambrel roof (barn roof) has two distinct slopes on each side — a steep lower slope and a shallow upper slope. This dual-pitch design provides maximum interior headroom and usable attic space. The gambrel roof shingle calculator computes each slope separately and sums them for the total sloped area.

The lower slope is typically very steep (14/12 to 18/12 pitch). The upper slope is much shallower (4/12 to 6/12 pitch). Each slope's run is approximately 25% of the total building width. The calculator uses these proportions to compute slope lengths and areas:

Knuckle Line Transition Flashing

The knuckle line (break line) is the horizontal transition where the steep lower slope meets the shallow upper slope. This critical joint runs along both sides of the building (total footage = 2 × building length). The knuckle requires:

  • Metal break flashing — continuous metal strip bent to match the angle change
  • Extra starter shingles — a second starter course above the flashing
  • Ice and water shield — self-adhering membrane for water protection at the bend
