What Is a Pyramid Hip Roof?

A pyramid hip roof (also called a pavilion roof) has 4 triangular faces that slope upward from the base and meet at a single peak — the apex. Unlike a standard hip roof, a pyramid roof has no main ridge line. Every face is a triangle, and all 4 hip seams radiate from the apex to the building corners.

Pyramid roofs are commonly found on gazebos, pavilions, cupolas, and square residential additions. They provide excellent wind resistance from all directions because no face is vertical.

Pyramid Roof Area Formula

For a square pyramid roof (equal base sides), each of the 4 triangular faces has the same area. The area of one triangular face is:

Face Area = ½ × Base Side × Slant Height

The slant height is the distance from the midpoint of a base edge to the apex, measured along the roof surface:

Slant Height = √( (Base Side / 2)² + Rise² )

Where Rise = (Base Side / 2) × (Pitch / 12). The total pyramid roof area is 4 times one face area. For non-square bases (Side A ≠ Side B), the calculator computes two different slant heights and sums the 4 individual face areas.

How to Measure a Pyramid Roof

Measuring a pyramid roof requires only two ground-level measurements and a pitch reading:

1
Measure Side A
Base edge length
2
Measure Side B
Perpendicular edge
3
Read Pitch
Pitch gauge or app
4
Calculate
Bundles + caps

For a 30×30 ft square pyramid roof at 6/12 pitch with 15% waste: the total sloped area is approximately 1,082 sq ft, requiring 38 field bundles + 3 hip cap bundles = 41 total bundles.
