How Hip Roof Shingle Calculation Works

A hip roof has slopes on all four sides. On a rectangular building, the two longer sides are trapezoidal faces, and the two shorter sides are triangular faces. All four sides meet at diagonal hip ridges that run from each corner to the main ridge at the top. This geometry makes hip roof shingle calculation more complex than a simple gable roof.

Why Hip Roofs Need 15–20% Waste

Standard gable roofs use a 10% waste factor. Hip roofs require a 15% to 20% waste allowance because every shingle along the 4 diagonal hip seams must be cut at an angle. These triangular offcuts are too small to reuse in the field area. On a 40×30 ft hip roof at 6/12 pitch, the 4 hip seams total approximately 90 linear feet of angled cuts — producing significantly more material waste than a gable roof.

Complex hip roofs with dormers, valleys, or Dutch gable ends may need 20% waste. The calculator above defaults to 15% for standard hip roofs, but you can adjust between 10%, 15%, and 20%.

Hip Ridge Cap Requirements

In addition to field shingles, hip roofs require ridge cap shingles installed along the main ridge and all 4 hip ridges. One standard bundle of ridge cap shingles covers approximately 35 linear feet.
